Steps in Painting Your Fence

Fence provides privacy and security to every home and for it to continue its purpose for years, proper care is needed. Moisture is the number one enemy of your fence. Proper painting blocks moisture from penetrating the wood which can damage it. It also prevents insects and rots in your fence and slows decomposition.

Here are the steps in painting your fence that will extend its life and give it an appealing look for years.

1. Gather needed supplies: brush, roller paint, fence paint, face mask, wire brush, sandpaper, masking tape, gloves, plastic drop cloth, and newsprint.

2. Remove old coating. Apply paint stripper on the fence surface. When the finish starts to lift, begin scrubbing with wire brush.

3. Rinse. With pressure washer, rinse the timber.

4. Clean the Fence. With a cleaning solution, scrub away the dirt, mildew, and debris on the fence. Using pressure water, wash away the sobs. Let the surface dry. Once dry, repair the cracks and other damaged parts. Sand away imperfections and change boards with unfixable flaws.

5. Protect Lawn & Garden. Put plastic drop cloth down the ground to protect your plantings or grass from paint drops. Use plywood to maneuver around bushes and shrubs which are near your fence. The plywood allows you to push the shrubs away to protect it and also give space for you to work on the painting.

6. Begin Painting. Mix the coating thoroughly and with polyester brush start painting.

7. Paint the Pickets. Start painting from top to bottom of the fence. Use a roller to back-brush the fence. Do this every few feet to evenly cover the timber and prevent lap marks.

8. Let Dry. If necessary, second coating should be done after the first coating is dry completely.

Ways to Enhance Your Deck

Make outdoor experience even more relaxing and enjoyable on a well-furnished deck. Here are some ideas that will add function, style, and serenity to any deck.

Bring out the Pillows

Loved ones will linger much longer on the deck if the seating area is softer with pillows. Durable and dainty accent pillows which are made of outdoor fabrics are not hard to find in most home stores. And these materials can withstand the sun and rain. Mix up bright prints and different colors of pillows that will bring cheerful atmosphere to the deck.

Enhance Railing

Railings on decks are mainly for safety but that doesn’t mean you can’t be stylish with them.  Dress your deck with glass panel to give it a contemporary style or use metal or wood with unique railing designs.

Add Containers for Color and Height

Design your deck with stunning containers. Place pots which can support tall, striking ornamental plants beside the door or along the railings. Mix potted perennials and annuals for a spill of colors. Also place veggies on the deck where there is enough sun to grow tomatoes or herbs.

Lay Down Rugs

Transform your deck into an extended outdoor room by adding appealing rugs into the space. These accessories offer a cozy feel to the seating area and gives texture underfoot.  They can also be used as lounging space.

Place Furniture

Set up furniture to gather friends and family for a chat. There are different types of outdoor furniture and you should choose the kind of seating that will best suit your deck’s usage and space.  For instance, a chat-height set provides guests to have snacks while having friendly talks. It is also flexible and can be easily regrouped to hold large gatherings.
